Growing up in Boulder, Colorado, Katie was a model student and always had her hand in some project as Student Council President to keep herself busy, but her true passion was running track and being the best on her high school team.  In her junior year she unfortunately suffered an ankle injury that was severe enough to put an end to her college sport aspirations, and so she spent her time healing and going through physical therapy feeling quite at a loss about what to do with her future since her dreams were lost.  Her parents pushed for her to turn her full focus toward academics and to explore other sensible options; to make them happy she settled on attending the University of Oklahoma to study Speech-Language Pathology even though her heart was not at all in it.

It took less than a year away at college for Katie to come to the realization that she just couldn't do it.  She was smart enough but the drive was not there and she found herself wishing to just return home to Colorado.  There was no way she could push through three more years of misery knowing that a Master's program awaited her after graduation.  It wasn't worth it and so she quit, no matter that it enraged her parents to the point they refused to speak to her.

She returned to Colorado but decided on Denver as her new home.  Her aunt and cousin had moved to the city so she knew she wouldn't be totally alone there.  Katie found herself a job down at the diner, secured a decently priced studio apartment, and set out to define her life on her own terms for a change.
